California’s controversial billionaire tax has picked up maybe its least stunning endorsement but: the Communist Get together.
The California arm of Communist Get together USA formally threw its help behind Proposition 40 on Thursday, urging voters to help a a one-time 5% tax on the state’s roughly 200 billionaires.
“It’s as much as all of us, the 99%, to end up with an enormous vote and present these billionaires that it’s time for them to pay their fair proportion,” the group wrote on its web site.
The endorsement comes because the billionaire tax has sparked an more and more weird political warfare in deep-blue California — pitting organized labor and the Communist Get together towards a few of Silicon Valley’s richest residents and even Gov. Gavin Newsom and his seemingly gubernatorial successor, Democratic frontrunner Xavier Becerra
Prop. 40, which was sponsored by SEIU-United Healthcare Employees West, would impose a wealth tax on billionaires to rake in roughly $100 billion, with 90% earmarked for well being care and the rest going towards meals help and Okay-12 training.
The Communist Get together stated the cash is desperately wanted to plug holes created by President Trump’s “Large Ugly Invoice,” whereas accusing the president of pushing “MAGA fascism.”
“With out Prop 40, important providers, akin to emergency care, might be shut down, inflicting huge hardship for working-class Californians,” the communists wrote.
Newsom has come out towards the tax, warning that California might in the end lose cash if its famously cell billionaire class packs up and strikes its large income-tax funds — in addition to their corporations.
Google co-founder Sergey Brin — who fled the communist Soviet Union together with his household as a baby — and different rich Californians have poured tens of hundreds of thousands into the battle towards Prop. 40, together with backing rival Propositions 41 and 42, which might kneecap the billionaire tax in the event that they obtain extra votes.
Dave Regan, head of SEIU-UHW, advised KCRA 3 that “there may be completely no proof that billionaires depart” the state if Prop. 40 passes.
“Billionaires are the wealthiest individuals on the planet. They will stay wherever they need on the planet, not to mention within the nation.”
In one other interview, he steered the billionaire tax is now “a nationwide marketing campaign.”
The Communist Get together particularly singled out Brin and his billionaire allies in its endorsement.
“Billionaires together with Google co-founder Sergey Brin are spending hundreds of thousands of {dollars} to defeat Prop 40,” the group stated.
The get together urged Californians to reject Props. 41 and 42 together with approving the wealth tax, declaring that “these midterms will not be on the market.”
